Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) Program

Physical therapist assistant The Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) is a skilled health care worker who carries out patient treatment programs under the direction of the physical therapist. Duties of the assistant include the application of various physical agents (ice, heat, ultrasound, and electrical stimulation), massage, gait training, and therapeutic exercise to relieve pain and restore function.

The Physical Therapist Assistant Program at SCC is a five-semester, limited-access lock-step program. The program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE), American Physical Therapy Association. Graduates of this accredited program receive an Associate in Science Degree for the Physical Therapist Assistant and are eligible to take the state licensure examination.

According to the latest statistics reports regarding Physical Therapist Assistant:

  • Supply and demand data shows that there are 3 applicants for every 4 openings in the state of Florida indicating more vacancies than there people to fill the jobs.
  • There are projected to have at least 330 job openings for PTA's in the state of Florida through 2008.
