Web Page Review Standards

The Seminole State web site must be maintained to be consistent with the current college marketing campaign. To ensure that our site remains consistent with this campaign, and to facilitate easy access and use by outside individuals, the following Web publication standards have been created.

The Web Guidelines Group, designed these standards for your use.  Please go over each of the following points carefully and make any changes to your current Web page(s), as necessary.

Remember! All web pages accessible from the Seminole State website may be subject to random audit by the Web Guidelines Group using the criteria on the list.  At such time as your web page/site is reviewed, you will be provided with feedback of the review results.  (Please see our Web Author Notification Procedures for more information.)  The elements included in this list follow the absolute requirements and preferred style as defined in the  Seminole State Web Development Guidelines.

(Follow this link to access a printable version of the review checklist developed for the purposes of page/site review.)

  • Use a standard theme (buttons, background, banners, icons, etc.) that has been approved by the Seminole State Publications department.

    • Contact the Webmaster for more information.

  • Include the Seminole State Copyright information at the bottom of each page.

    • Copyright © Seminole Community College, 2000

  • Ensure that your pages can be viewed with low resolution monitors and early browser versions.

    • Your page design should be viewable at a 640x480 screen resolution and in 256 colors, as many viewers have their monitors set to these levels.

    • Avoid the use of frames, as they are not supported by many early browsers and will cause navigational problems when accessed by search engines.

  • If you are using themes and navigation bars within FrontPage, place all pages into a “content” subfolder except for your home page, default.htm (or index.htm).

  • Include an HTML title for each page.

  • Include a link back to the Seminole State homepage or related area on each page.

  • Include the date when the document was last modified on each page.

  • Include your contact information and complete email address in an email link somewhere on your site, such as on a “Contact” page or on your home page.

  • Use link names that can be understood out of context.

  • Use ALT tags on all images to summarize the content or purpose of the image.

  • Do not use animations or blink tags. (They may be immediately removed by the Webmaster.)

  • Do not use poor quality photos, graphics with a very large file size, or an excessive number of smaller graphics that would cause the total page size to exceed 50k.

  • Do not underline text on the page.  It confuses users by making them think the text is linked.  Use bold or different colored text instead.

  • Do not use background sounds/music or load sounds or music automatically.  It greatly increases load time and for the most part annoys the user.

  • Do not use Microsoft Word 2000 as your html editor.

    • Word 2000 adds in extra elements which are not supported by some browsers and which may add to the load time of your pages.

  • In all WebCT sites, choose one of the icon styles provided by WebCT and remain consistent with that style throughout your site. Do not replace these icons with animated gifs or other random images. (They may be removed without warning by the Seminole State Webmaster or the Distance Learning Department.)

    • If you have licensed a prepackaged WebCT site from a publisher, the specialized icons made by the publisher are also acceptable for use.

    • If you require additional icons that are not provided by WebCT, contact the DL Department and icons will be created for you in keeping with your chosen style.
