Mentoring Program

Volunteer/Mentoring application

The College Reach-Out Program at Seminole Community College is committed to providing support to the youth of Seminole County, in hopes of increasing their opportunities to attend a post-secondary institution. The mentoring program is an essential component in our commitment to these students.

Statistics prove mentoring provides the following benefits:
  • A one-to-one relationship with a student or professional.
  • Successful role models.
  • An opportunity to improve the students' awareness of careers and the relationship between career development and post-secondary education.
  • A caring relationship that offers affiliation and security.
  • Awareness and regard of cultural diversity.
  • An opportunity to improve social skills.

As a mentor, your responsibilities include:

  • A commitment to provide support to the goals of the program.
  • Phoning the student once or twice a week.
  • The ability to attend a meeting once a quarter.
  • Complete a curriculum based on self-esteem; life skills; career exploration; personal growth and development; tutoring; and goal setting with the prot?.
  • Being an effective listener.
  • Helping the student realize the benefits of completing high school and attending a post-secondary institution.
  • Developing a level of trust with the student. (The trust relationship established between mentor and prot? is very important!)

The benefits of becoming a mentor are too numerous to name, but a few of the immediate advantages are:

  • Providing positive guidance to an at-risk youth.
  • Assisting to increase regard for people of other cultures.
  • Personal recognition of "making a difference."
  • Appreciation of involvement.
  • Personal growth and development.
How to become a mentor?
  • Call the CROP office, 407.708.2049 for information and an application.
  • Attend a Saturday meeting to meet the students.
  • Make a commitment to the program and the prot? to provide a positive relationship and a friendly ear.

The staff will determine the best matches based on interest surveys that both prospective mentors and the prot?'s have completed. We will provide training opportunities, resources and any supplies and tools that might assist you and your prot? to meet your pre-determined goals.
